Applicant Eligibility
- Principal applicant must be an IARS member.
- Principal applicant must be an investigator with research experience who has yet to establish substantial funding.
- Duration since completion of clinical training or Ph.D. must be under 10 years.
- Prior CSRA recipients are not eligible to apply.
- Prior or current recipients of NIH R0-1 grants, or the equivalent, are not eligible to apply. Exceptions may be made for individuals who have not received funding for clinical research.
Research Guidelines
- Research must involve human subjects, in vivo or in vitro.
- The proposed project must have direct relevance to anesthesiology.
- Applicants must identify a senior mentor at their institution whose participation is vital to the success of the study.
Application Process
- The official online application must be used. The "Certification" and "Acceptance" terms of the application are basic and integral conditions of the Award.
- All information requested in the application and appendices must be supplied. Failure to do so will disqualify the application.
- Any change in the status of the principal applicant subsequent to the submission of the application must be conveyed in writing to the IARS, and will require review and reconsideration by the IARS.
- All current extra-mural funding of the applicant, mentor, and co-investigators must be listed.
- Project titles and any overlap to the proposed project must be disclosed. The percent effort of the applicant on all funded projects must be listed.
- Applications must include documentation of 1) project approval by the Institutional Review Board and 2) a patient informed-consent form, if required.
- A letter of recommendation from the applicant’s mentor, explaining their participation in the proposed study must be attached.
Applicant Selection
- All applications are peer reviewed by the IARS, and awards will be granted at the sole discretion of the IARS.
- Awards will go to projects with high scientific merit and probability of success.
- Priority funding will be awarded to proposals that are independent of other extra-mural support.
- Experienced investigators working in new areas will receive consideration.
Award Details
- Winners of the 2011 CSRA will be notified in May 2011.
- The maximum award amount for any selected project is $80,000.
- Institutional indirect expenses will not be funded.
- Funds will be allocated in two equal installments of $40,000 paid in July 2011 and July 2012. Consideration will be given to requests for unequal payment installments.
- The second (final) installment is contingent upon receipt of a satisfactory progress report submitted to IARS by June 1, 2012.
- A final progress report must be submitted to IARS on or before December 1, 2013.
- Any and all publications resulting from research that has utilized IARS funds must indicate the following: "Supported (or ‘Supported in part’) by a grant from the International Anesthesia Research Society."
