IARS Awards and Grants Program

IARS established its Awards and Grants Program in 1983 to further the scientific advancement of the anesthesiology specialty. To date, the IARS has funded 125 projects, contributing over $10,000,000 to the anesthesia community.

The IARS Awards Program includes two categories of research awards and two categories of education awards. In addition, the IARS contributes $200,000 annually to the Foundation of the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists (SCA) to support cardiothoracic and vascular anesthesia research projects.

As a community committed to stimulating and funding anesthesia-related projects that will advance patient-care worldwide, the IARS is pleased to provide their talented and diverse member base with an exclusive multi-million dollar awards program.

Research Awards

Frontiers in Anesthesia Research Award (FARA) - $750,000

Established in 1995 to foster innovation and creativity by an individual researcher in the anesthesiology field. Applicants must demonstrate originality, scientific excellence, and the potential for leadership in the field. Applications available May 2011.

Clinical Scholar Research Awards (CSRA)- $320,000

Intended to support clinical investigations that will further the understanding of clinical practice in anesthesiology and related sciences. Four investigators will receive up to $80,000 for their research in 2011. APPLY NOW.

SCA-IARS Research Grants - $200,000

In 2009 the IARS pledged a gift of $1 million dollars to the SCA Foundation to support the SCA-IARS Starter and Mid-Career Grants. The SCA-IARS Starter Grants total $50,000 per award, and the SCA-IARS Mid-Career Grants total $100,000 per award. Both grants are designed to fund cardiothoracic and vascular anesthesia research projects by investigators with ranks of Associate Professor, or less. Applications available October 2010.

Education Awards

Teaching Recognition Awards (TRA) - $30,000

Designed to recognize individuals with outstanding teaching skills and career contributions to the academic community. The award is comprised of two separate parts, Innovation in Education and Achievement in Education with each award totaling $15,000. Applications available April 2011.
